EPQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do the EPQ if my school doesn’t offer it?

Yes. You can take the EPQ as a private candidate through Avernus Education. As a Pearson Edexcel–approved centre, we supervise your project online, assess it and enter you for the qualification, so your school does not need to run the EPQ.

How much does the EPQ cost as a private candidate?

Our full online EPQ programme has a registration fee of £350, plus £250 for exam board entry and submission. Hourly EPQ tuition and our project marking and feedback service are also available – contact us for current rates.

How long does the EPQ take?

The EPQ is designed as around 120 guided learning hours. Most students complete it over six to twelve months alongside their A levels, and we build a timetable around your own pace and commitments.

When can I start the EPQ?

There are two entry points each year, in the autumn and the spring, so students working at different paces can choose the one that suits them. Your supervisor agrees a personal timetable with you and guides you through the key dates along the way.

Can I do an artefact, or only a dissertation?

Both. Many students write a dissertation of around 5,000 words, but you can also create an artefact – such as a design, a performance or a piece of code – supported by a written report.

How is the EPQ marked?

Your project is assessed against four assessment objectives: managing the project, using resources, developing and realising the project, and reviewing it. Your production log and final presentation are central to your mark. The EPQ is graded A* to E, and an A* is worth 28 UCAS points.

Do universities value the EPQ?

Yes. Universities value the independent research, academic writing and critical-thinking skills the EPQ develops. It gives you plenty to discuss in your personal statement and at interview, and some universities make lower alternative offers to students with a strong EPQ.

Can international and home-educated students take the EPQ with Avernus?

Yes. Supervision is delivered online, so you can work with us from anywhere in the UK or abroad.

Achieve a standout EPQ with Avernus Tuition Studio – expert one-to-one guidance that builds real academic skills and strengthens your university applications.
